Why Real Madrid Never Truly Contested Arsenal for Martín Zubimendi

When Arsenal secured the signing of Martín Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, many fans were left wondering: what happened to the reported interest from Real Madrid?

As it turns out, the Spanish giants never actually made a formal offer for the midfielder.

Despite several reports earlier in 2025 linking Zubimendi to Madrid—especially as a potential long-term successor to Toni Kroos—the club never advanced beyond the discussion stage. Talks between Real Madrid and Real Sociedad did take place, but no concrete bid was ever submitted.

Meanwhile, Arsenal moved decisively. By May, the Gunners had already agreed to trigger Zubimendi’s €60 million release clause and had reached personal terms with the player. Their clear intent and swift action put them well ahead of any competition.

Even when Madrid showed renewed interest in June, it was too late. Arsenal’s negotiations were already nearing completion, and no official offer came from Madrid to derail the deal.

In the end, while Real Madrid may have had their eye on Zubimendi, Arsenal were the only club to back that interest with real action—and they got their man.
